Bulletproof Coffee founder says sleep is the key for success
Bulletproof Coffee founder says sleep is the key for successBulletproof Coffee founder says sleep is the key for successLast week Elon Musk made headlines for his New York Times interview in which he revealed that he works 120 hours per week, uses Ambien as a frequent sleep aid, and hasnt taken time off in years except for that time he had Malaria. Clearly sleep isnt his highest priority. Most entrepreneurs running a successful company tend to have extreme and odd hours and dont sleep enough, but for Dave Asprey, founder of the multi-million dollar wellness company Bulletproof Coffee, quality sleep has been one of his main keys for finding success. In addition to its miracle elixir coffee which is a combination of specialty coffee, anken and oil from coconut extract, the company sells books, cognitive enhancement supplements (like octane oil), and food and beverage products. Now unlike Musk, Asprey views sleep as an integral part of him biohacking his life. He plans to live until 180. This is the foundation his company was built on. But that wasnt always the way he lived. He told Ladders, Before I createdBulletproof, I was a workaholic tech executive. I was fat, unhealthy, and had low energy despite eating what was supposedly healthy food and exercising. Now, with the biohacking techniques Ive spent years researching, Im confident I can live to 180 and others can too. For that to be possible, its important to be present and feel your sharpest and strongest. Thats theBulletprooflifestyle. Its helped hundredsof thousands of people perform at levels far beyond what theyd expect, without burning out, getting sick, or allowing stress to control decisions. The biohacking strategy has worked not only personally for Asprey (he is known as the father of biohacking) but for the company as well as their most recent funding round brought in $40 million.Greatist.com recently recognized Asprey as one of the Most Influential People in Health Fitness, not only because of his products and books (his new bookGame Changers comes out inDecember) but his podcast, which now has more than 75 million downloads. Ladders spoke with him about his best productivity hacks, career advice and, of course, the importance of sleep. On his morning routineAspreys morning routine has been written about several times as people are so astonished that he doesnt check his phone the minute he opens his eyes. In fact, he leaves it on airplane mode until after he has dropped his kids off at school.Im naturally a night owl. Years ago, I learned from researcherMichael Breusthat people can be categorized by chronotype, referring to the largely genetically-driven factors that make some of us early birds, some of us night owls, and others something in the middle. My whole life Ive done my best work late at night, often working late into the evenings after I put the kids to bed. The research is clear on the importance of sleep, so I take steps to get 8 hours of deep, high-quality sleep e very night. As part of that ritual, I sleep with my phone on airplane mode with alerts turned off. My phone is basically an advanced sleep monitor that wakes me when Im already in light sleep. In the morning I only check my phone to see how well I slept, and then I put it away until Ive dropped my kids off at school.Just hack itIve been a geek for decades. In other words, I approach every challenge with persistence and tweak it constantly. I did that earlier in my career as a tech executive, and I pioneered this approach atBulletproofas the worlds first biohacker on a mission to improve human performance. As a long-time hacker and now a biohacker I see each challenge as an opportunity for iteration and improvement. In fact, I ask my kids each night how they failed each day. If they cant think of any failures, I tell them to try harder the next day.Asprey said a turning point for him in his career was when he was so burned out from working as a tech executive that he passed out on an airplane during a trip to a 48-hour round trip to China. One could say that was a challenge in my career, but I saw it as a clear sign I needed to hack my life. That incident motivated me to start hacking my biology, which in turn enabled me to createBulletproof. On the importance of workout breaksI stand on theBulletproofWhole Body Vibration Plateevery day or two for 15 minutes. This causes massive lymph circulation throughout the body and moves oxygen to tissues that may not get very much of it, even areas youre unlikely to reach while walking around.Low-level aerobic activity on aregular basis improves insulin signaling, reduces stress, inflammation, and boosts longevity. It reduces your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia and even the common cold. I also meditate regularly. The Best Super Bowl Jobs
The Best Super Bowl JobsThe Best Super Bowl JobsThe Best Super Bowl JobsIf you cant join em on the field, join em behind the scenes.Long before the National Football Leagues season winds down and the final two teams are left standing, cities across the United States slugged out their own battle for the right to host the Big Game. Why? Because having the Super Bowl in your city means an influx of millions of dollars as people pour in for the game. All of those visitors buy plane angewohnheitets and hotel rooms, load up on food and drinks, go to restaurants, and pay for parking.Another benefit of hosting the Super Bowl is that the need for workers goes through the roof. Every hotel and restaurant has to prepare for the flood of crazed fans by getting some extra help, meaning there are a lot of Super Bowl jobs available.Want to be a part of the game when it comes to your town? Here are some typical Super Bowl jobs that pop up before kickoff. Not all positions are just for the big game, ei ther. If you have a sports team in town, keep these sports events jobs in mind year-round tooLimo/town car driversThe guys on the field arent the only stars around when its Super Bowl time. From rock stars to Hollywood legends, lots of A-listers come out for the show. In 2016, when Super Bowl L was played in Santa Clara, CA, one company planned to hire 300 extra limo drivers for that weekend alone.Of course, youd need to have (or get) your Commercial Drivers License (CDL) to drive a limo, so take that into consideration. The pay isnt great, but its one of the Super Bowl jobs that offers a cool opportunity to rub elbow with the stars. You could end up taking Katy Perry to the game or driving Ryan Gosling to a restaurant with his friends. If youre interested in the job, just make sure you know where youre going, youre a safe driver, and you can keep your mouth closed. Telling your friends who is in your car and putting pictures on Facebook or Instagram are sure ways to get into trouble .Nurses and doctorsSuper Bowl L packed over 71,000 crazed fans into one stadium thats a lot of people in one distributionspolitik at one time. Add the excitement of the game and a few beers and you can expect there will be some injuries. Local hospitals and clinics will gear up and have their staff ready to go for a Super Bowl weekend, but the stadium also needs to have medical staff on hand. When Super Bowl XLVIII was played at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, they actually brought in a portable ER for the day. Because that was a cold-weather game, other issues like hypothermia and slips and falls came into play. Those with medical credentials and experience may have an opportunity to be a part of the big day by offering their services for the Super Bowl.Cash auditorsTheres a lot of cash that flows through an NFL stadium on any given Sunday, but when its the Super Bowl, its mora. A lot more. Souvenir sales go through the roof. The cost of all concessions goes way up. Add the number of new Super Bowl jobs and new hires brought in to work at these stands for the game and you could have a cash flow nightmare.Bring in the auditors. If you have cash-handling experience from working in a bank or other retail and want to be a part of the big day, they could use your help. One help wanted ad for game day auditors said that the duties would be to perform surprise cash register audits to ensure proper cash handling policies are being followed and document results informing management of any violations. It may not be the most exciting of the Super Bowl jobs at the game, but youd probably handle more money in one day than most people do in a year.RelatedLinkedIn Makeovers for NFL Quarterbacks Tom Brady and Matt RyanSecurityEvent security jobs? No surprise here. 70,000 fans in a party mood. Cash flowing everywhere. Theres going to be a big need for extra security both inside and outside the stadium. Extra security personnel do everything from checking bags and patting down guests to watching the parking lots for trouble.Dont have your Unarmed Security License? Some companies may reimburse your fees to get your license just so they can sign you up for the Super Bowl. After the game, you still have your license and you can get other event security jobs if you like. Its a win-win.BloggersAs you can probably guess, the Super Bowl gets crazy media attention and a lot of companies want to cash in on that. As a result jobs as extra bloggers are available for covering every possible angle of the big game. What was it like to tailgate before the game? The game through the eyes of a hot dog vendor. How about that halftime show? If you can think it up, you can write it up.Will blogging get you into the game for free? Not likely. However, if you can swing a ticket, you could spin that into some good money with a few good ideas. You might even come out ahead.Halftime platzdeckchen upEveryone knows that the halftime show at the Super Bowl is an awesome specta cle. Just think for a moment about how quickly that stage is set up. The whistle blows, the teams leave the field, and the television goes to a commercial break. When the cameras turn back on the stadium, theres a rock concert going on That takes a lot of people. For Super Bowl LI in Houston, they had a call out for Halftime Field Team Members. Does it pay? Probably not much, if anything. Most of the time these people are volunteers. Plus, field team members need to commit to weeks of training before the big game to make sure it all goes smoothly. What do field team members do? They mostly push really large, really heavy pieces of stage and equipment on and off the field.Heres the perk of this Super Bowl job though During the show, the field team members are the ones who make up that on-field audience. How cool would that be?Working one of these Super Bowl jobs may not be as glamorous as it sounds its hard work and you probably wont get to see much, if any, of the game itself. Plus, the pay is just a tick above minimum wage in most cases. So if the pay isnt great and the work is tough, why do it? Because you can put Super Bowl on your resume And how cool is that?Is your resume Super Bowl worthy? Three questions every ambitious person should ask themselves
Three questions every ambitious person should ask themselvesThree questions every ambitious person should ask themselvesMaureen Chiquetbegan her career in marketing at LOreal lichterstadt in 1985. She has worked at The Gap, helped launch Old Navy, and welches president of Banana Republic before becoming COO and President of U.S. operations of Chanel in 2003. In 2007 she became its first Global CEO, where she oversaw the business and brands worldwide expansion. She left Chanel in 2016 to focus on writing, speaking, and developing new leadership initiatives, including her recent bookBeyond the Label. She recently sat down with world-leading business thinkerWhitney Johnson, author ofBuild an A-Teamand host of the Disrupt Yurself podcast, to discuss how she developed her signature leadership style. This conversation has been edited and condensed. To listen to Maureen and Whitneys full conversation on the Disrupt Yurself Podcast, click here.WhitneyYou studied film and literature at Yale. Ho w did that influence you as a merchant and as a marketer?MaureenI dont think I could have chosen a better course of study, which sounds strange when you think of marketing and retail- you think of numbers and spreadsheets and pie charts and graphs. Literature is all aboutstories and about human connections. And fruchtwein consumer products rely on a certain emotional connection, so I think thats number one.Number two, film and theater really dimensionalize, and show signs and symbols that get us emotional. So as youre looking at an image that evokes a certain emotion, there is a way that being very attuned to your own emotions while watching something allows us to think about how consumers might see something. How they might view something, and ways that we might change or craft an image to encourage purchase. There is a way that being very attuned to your own emotions while watching something allows us to think about how consumers might see something.WhitneyIn your book, you talk ab out a number of instances where you took on roles that werent necessarily glamorous or exciting. Youve been the CEO of Chanel, but its not like it welches one straight shot up the ladder. What are some examples where you took a job or got a role that wasnt quite what you thought it would be?MaureenWhen I got to LOreal, I was going to be out on the road as a sales rep, basically. I ended up being in the north of France in coal mining country, which is traditionally the foggiest, grayest, most dismal part of the country. Thats where I was stationed to sell cosmetic and hair products out of my little suitcase into hypermarkets, which are giant supermarkets like Sams Club.I was supposed to sell end caps- the displays at the end of an aisle, the things that are on promotion. I was supposed to negotiate with managers at the hypermarket, and the marketing team supplied me with behauptung pamphlets full of marketing speak. I realized I couldnt speak this marketing speak, but I had to speak their language. So I asked, What would it cost me to get one of those end caps? I ended up getting the end caps that I wanted.WhitneyYour first job is in LOreal, then you and your husband move to the United States, where you get a job at the Gap. You abflug in the sample closet, then what?MaureenAfter the sample closet, I was in the accessory department. I was assistant merchandiser of socks and belts. Not exactly what I bargained for, but I found ways within that opportunity to stake a claim and make a name for myself. Belts had been ignored by the Gap. In the stores, most belts sold at $9.99, which was barely above cost. Id noticed that a lot of women were wearing jeans and wider belts, so I decided that I was going to build this new assortment of belts for Gap. I loved leather, and of course the kind of leather I wanted was expensive, but I took a risk and had all these belts made. I convinced my boss and my bosss boss that we should price the belts much higher, in the $30s. I wa s convinced that wed sell them, and in fact, we did.WhitneyHow did you convince them? What did you do?MaureenI had all the data points prepared. I looked at the increases of denim selling, pointed out pictures of women with belts on. I sold it with the line, Shouldnt we as Gap, an American company, have belts to go with our American jeans? They were willing to take the risk with me,and it was an amazing success. In so many ways, it built my reputation. I became the belt girl. For me, it was finding the opportunity in even the smallest areas. It was finding the opportunity in even the smallest areas.WhitneyThats a great story- and playing where other people didnt want to play turned out to be a career maker. What happened next?MaureenI was later promoted to the denim department, which was really interesting because denim was an area that relied a lot on sourcing fabrics and figuring out how much fabric to get to the cutter and how much needs to be cut. It was actually very technical an d very difficult, and led me to one of my biggest lessons when I got yelled at by the CEO of the company for not listening to him.WhitneyI would love to hear this lesson.MaureenI was an associate merchant in denim, and I was seven months pregnant. My boss was actually on maternity leave, and Mickey Drexler, who was then the CEO, called me into an advertising meeting. The goal of these meetings was usually to figure out what products were going to advertise at the Gap. I rushed down to the conference room, and I started to show him my brand new finish in a new pant called the wide leg jean. Boy, was I excited. He looks, and says, If this is such a good wash, why arent you doing it in the classic fit jean? I say, Well, no one wants to wear the classic fit jean anymore. Its old. It doesnt fit right. He asked, How many classic fit jeans are you selling? It was about 20,000 a week, and at the time we had a similar wide leg jean, and it was not selling even a fraction of that.I kept going , almost steamrolling him and finally he stopped the meeting and walked out.WhitneyWhat did you do? How did you feel?MaureenI started to cry. I was really upset because I thought Id lost my job. I went back to my office, the phone rang and it was Mickey. Mickey said to me, Maureen, youre a really good merchant. But you need to learn to listen. Really listen. Not to me because Im the CEO. Listen to your colleagues. Listen to your customers. Open your ears. Take things in.I thanked him. And I continue to thank him because its such a critical part ofwho I became as a leader. You need to learn to listen. Really listen. Not to me because Im the CEO. Listen to your colleagues. Listen to your customers. Open your ears. Take things in.WhitneyCan you think of a time when you were CEO and you heard Mickeys voice in your head? A time where you thought, I need to listen right now?MaureenWhen I first came to Chanel, I was the only woman at the head of a table of ten men, and they were really savv y executives. All of them had been in the business for 20-odd years, and many of them were a lot older than I was. I went through about a year of training, so I was traveling around the world, looking at our manufacturing, looking at our sales, looking at our marketing- every department.By the time I got to be the CEO, I really wanted to institute some strategies, but I found myself saying, Youve got to slow down. Youve got to listen to things from their perspective.WhitneyCan you think of one of your hardest days on the job as CEO?MaureenThree or four years before I left, I had made a decision based on how disrupted our world was, through the Internet and globalization and millennials- all these things were coming at us that had not existed before. Were standing in front of the unknown. I had decided to launch a leadership program because I felt that the way to address problems was to go more systemically to the core and ask, How do you get leaders tochange their behaviorsto be abl e to take in this unknown future? I had practiced a different kind of leadership myself, which was much more about listening and asking questions. So I figured we should all actually embrace these qualities because this will help us with all the disruption in our world. So on a rainy day in July, I corralled my team into this big dusty ballroom. I first sent them outside to do team building exercises. If youve done team building exercises, sometimes theyre great, and sometimes you really dont want to do them. This was one of those times they really didnt want to do them. Then, I bring them back in and I tell them that we are going to proceed with this program, were going to learn how to be more empathetic and listen better and be more agile, etcetera. Of course, in that moment, Im doing everything but that.At lunchtime everybody was chit-chatting about how much they disliked the consultant I had brought in, about how much they hated the exercises. I asked them a series of leading que stions that they refused to answer. I realized that I had made the very mistake that I didnt want to make. I had actually become what I didnt want to become. I was trying to force a leadership program down their throats. So I stopped the offsite and I actually wrote a letter to each one of my leadership team members asking them for an hour and a half of their time just to talk to me about what they cared about.WhitneyWow.MaureenAsking, what in our culture do they want to keep, what did they want to evolve, where were they in their leadership? How did they feel about their positions? Everyone gave input to a document that actually set the course for another leadership initiative that we all created together. But it was tough at first. I was crushed by knowing that I went intoit the wrong way.WhitneyIf you were to talk to a college student who says, Someday I want to be a CEO, what advice would you give them?MaureenI actually dont love to give advice, but I like to ask a lot of questi ons. So I guess I would ask the question, Why? Why do you want to be a CEO? What about being a CEO really attracts you? And what makes your heart sing?Because what Ive noticed is that we have ideas about what these positions are- what you do, what you get to do- but we dont always understand the complexity, the difficulties, the responsibilities. I ask a series of three questions, instead of giving advice. I like to ask people what makes their heart sing. I ask, If I strip out the label, if I strip away the CEO title, why do you want that job? And, What cant you live without?Another thing I like to think about is asking, What do you do well, andwhere can you make a mark thats distinctly your own? This article firstappeared on Heleo.

5 Best Interview Questions to Ask Your Candidate - Spark Hire
5 Best Interview Questions to Ask Your Candidate - Spark HireWe recently discussed some of the best questions that candidates will ask you in an interview. If you are interviewing a talented and savvy job seeker, then chances are they will slip you a couple of those questions. If you intend on keeping that talent, then you had better be ready to answer them On the flip side though, what are some of the best questions you can ask a candidate in an interview to determine if they are right for your open position? The questions you ask your job seekers are the foundation of your interview. In fact, they pretty much make up the whole thing. You will get the information you need based on the kinds of questions you ask. If you ask the right questions, then you will get some very good and insightful answers. If you ask close-ended questions that give you little to no insight into how these candidates work, then youre only cheating yourself.Lets take a look at what some of the best interview q uestions for candidates are. What are the first five things you would do if you got this job?Phew Talk about getting right to the meat of it. In order to truly answer this question, the candidate needs to have a firm understanding of what this position entails. You need to make sure you have fully described this role and what is needed out of it. If you have done that, then this candidate will have to take a moment and really think about what they would do to excel in this position. It also gives you insight into how they view this position and what they think is needed in order to fill it.What are your two greatest weaknesses? This is certainly a popular question to ask in an interview, but theres good reason for that. Asking this question assesses the candidates ability to recognize the areas they need to improve upon. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is when I ask a candidate what they think their greatest weakness is and they say, Ohh, I dont know. Even worse is when they answ er the question with a strength. Cliche A great candidate will tell you an actual weakness and will follow it up with how they are trying to improve that weakness, or how they already have. What is your preferred work environment? This helps you determine if this candidate will fit into your companys culture- which is a really big component of finding the right candidate. A highly qualified candidate that doesnt fit in with the team likely wont work up to their full potential. Why did you leave, or why are you leaving, your brde job? This is one of the most common questions, but you can learn a lot from the candidate. If they answer this question with a negative about their last company or boss, then you probably dont want to hire them. It should be known that speaking negatively of your last company is off limits in an interview. If they speak poorly of them what will stop them from speaking poorly of you?Tell me about a time you took a risk and failed. This is kind of like the weakness es question. If they are smart, they will be honest and tell you about a time they really did fail. However, the key is elaborating upon that and telling you how they worked to fix it or what they are doing to better handle the situation next time. Failure to talk about failure is, well, failure.

Professional Resume Writers and Their Magic Wands
Professional Resume Writers and Their Magic Wands Professional Resume Writers and Their Magic Wands Today Im working on a fantastic project. My client has a diverse and interesting background and is making a career change. His experiences are perfect for what he wants to do next, but presenting them well means carefully sifting through them and selecting the things that are most helpful while minimizing the stuff that might distract recruiters.I love doing this and Im good at it. I instinctively know what to include and what to leave out and how to lay it all out on the page. If you have relevant experience, no matter how long ago, or how unusual it is, I can help you show your worth. But sometimes Im approached by people I cant help. People who simply dont have the experience required but who think I have a magic wand. Todays was an IT professional who wanted to go into web konzept. The only problem is that he hadnt done any web design I dont mean he hadnt done any professionally. I mean he hadnt done any. No volunteer work, no college studies, no unpaid work for friends and family. NothingI know I could do a great job, he told me. I just need someone to give me a chance and I can learn on the job. Thats where a good resume comes in.Um no. Actually it isnt. There is nothing I can do on a resume that can make up for the fact that you havent put in the time. If you have unpaid experience, I can make it look paid. If youve freelanced while working full-time jobs, I can bring that freelancing to the forefront. if you started out in design and then moved away from it, I have tricks to bring that design experience back into focus for employers. If youve taken college classes, I can write about your college design projects. But if youre just hoping to persuade employers to hire you with no experience and then teach you the job, youre hoping for a miracle and miracles I dont do.Photo by DoubleM2
Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans
Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans Realizing there was a need for veterans to find a way to use the skills they acquired during their military service and for employers to recruit highly skilled job candidates, in August 2018, Google announced a new addition to its Grow With Google initiative- Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans. This resource lets service members who are returning to the civilian workforce locate post-military jobs that match the roles they performed in the armed forces. A related service helps veterans who are starting their own businesses let customers know these entities are owned or led by veterans. Each year, approximately 200,000 service members leave the military and over the last five years, just under one million have returned to civilian life (Veteran Impact in the Workforce. Syracuse University Institute for Veterans and Military Families). One of the most significant problems transitioning veterans face involves entering or re-entering the civilian workforce. Close to half (45 percent) want to remain in careers related to their military jobs, but they struggle to find a way to fully utilize their skills. Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans helps facilitate this process. What Is Grow With Google? The tech giant launched Grow With Google in 2017 to provide free training, events, and tools to help individuals, including veterans and their spouses, acquire skills needed to succeed in school, the workplace, or their own businesses. It gives people who are not directly affiliated with Google the ability to utilize the companyâs tools and training to expand their skill sets and, subsequently, their employability or success as entrepreneurs. One can get a professional certification in IT support or learn how to utilize Googleâs tools through self-paced video lessons. Another extremely useful component of Grow With Google is a job search tool that gathers employment opportunities from around the web. Users can access it directly from the search engineâs homepage by entering keywords, for example, ânursing jobs near me, into the Google search bar. WIth Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans, former service people can further customize their search in order to find jobs that match their military roles. How to Use Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans To access Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans, go to the Google homepage and enter âjobs for veterans in the search box. You will then be asked to enter your MOS code. This is your Military Occupational Specialty- the job you held while in the armed forces. Depending on the branch of the military in which you served, this will be your MOS which is used by the Army and Marine Corps, AFSC (Air Force Specialty Code), or NEC (Navy Enlisted Classification). Your results will include relevant civilian jobs that correspond to the skills you used in your military role. Google Also Helps Vets Who Are Business Owners Google also recognizes the fact that some veterans opt to start their own businesses instead of looking for employment. The company introduced a way to promote vet-owned or led companies. Using Google My Business to create a free profile, those companies can self-identify so customers can easily find them. More Ways Google Helps Veterans Access Job Opportunities Companies that use Googles Cloud Talent Solution can provide job listings on their career sites that take veterans military skills into account. Service members who are looking for work can use their MOS, AFSC, or NEC to search for jobs on many employers websites or several job boards. Here are some of the sites that let you match your military skills with civilian job opportunities: Career Builder: Use Career Builder, a job board, to search for openings in a variety of fields. Type your MOS or relevant code into the search box.Getting Hired: This site specializes in matching disabled job seekers and veterans with employment.FedEx for Veterans: The package delivery company has a job search tool dedicated specifically to veterans. Enter your MOS or other occupational specialty code to see if it is hiring people with your skills.Encompass Health: Encompass Health provides inpatient rehabilitation, home healthcare, and hospice services. The company actively recruits veterans by allowing them to search by military occupational codes. Siemens: This German-based multi-national conglomerate hires in the career fields of engineering, manufacturing, operations, information technology, and sales and marketing. Enter your MOS or related code into the search box. If theres a matching job, it will show up in your results.

Over 60% of workers have thought about quitting their jobs because of this reason
Over 60% of workers have thought about quitting their jobs because of this reason Over 60% of workers have thought about quitting their jobs because of this reason I donât know that itâs actually possible to achieve enduring job satisfaction. Career malaise is easier to identify in the corporate world, but it permeates all industries, it just takes different forms. Paper pushers slump in their cubicles and start a stamp collection, while rock stars develop a coke habit and put out albums like Bridges to Babylon; both examples evidence a lack of drive and starvation for appreciation. There are also circumstantial factors donating to frequent reporting on job satisfaction. For one thing, the herd now entering their early thirties grew up in a time wherein college degrees were pitched as golden tickets. Get a degree in anything as soon as possible has finally reached its dead end. The other, less charitable factor, is the one about my generation-workforce millennials being the most voracious for approval. Iâll grant that anecdotal evidence makes this a uniquely difficult charge to fight, but not without insisting that the root isnât neces sarily narcissism and self-absorption. I donât think itâs a crime to welcome professional self-evaluations, many of which can only be properly addressed by requesting feedback from employers. Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The key questionsIn a new CNBC/SurveyMonkey Workplace Happiness Survey, a third of the 8,000 American working adults queried said that they considered quitting their job in the last three months. Sixty-seven percent of this demographic reported ruminating over this resolve because they feel undervalued. To be clear, a quarter meant this in terms of salary, while the remaining meant they would like more verbal demonstrations of appreciation for the work they do from their colleagues.Ninety percent of workers that havenât given resignation a serious thought still lamented this lack of recognition; this was a recurring theme in the new report. Wor kers that have considered quitting and those that havenât (yet) still agreed on the key issues troubling their place of employment- a lack of mentorship availability, the perceived refusal to instruct staff on how to operate and or combat automation on behalf of their employers, and a frustrating hesitance evidenced by their bosses to validate their efforts. . Validation doesnât only have to be communicated via a moist, hand on the shoulder âAtta boy!â sentiments, in fact, most find these affirmations to be condescending. Workers like to be alerted to their value in the form of increased opportunities within their firms, the younger the employee the fiercer the appetite. One in four respondents that belong to the Gen Z and millennial generation (age 18â"24) feel that opportunities to advance are the most important precursor to the longevity of their tenure at a given company. Some autonomy must be allowed in the crawl space between positions, as salary isnât a strong enough incentive on its own to motivate workers to rise to the challenge. Telling employees precisely how and exactly how long it should take them to complete a task is to ignore the grit and grain of the bottom of the professional food chain-productivity will suffer and company morale will suffer. Seventy-one percent of workers that have considered quitting in the last months occasioned doing so by reason of lack of self-government within their position.Roughly 3.5 million U.S workers quit their jobs every month; the unemployment rate being what it is, means the well of passionate competent workers of which to replace these with dries more and more every year.Brian Kropp, who is the vice president at research firm Gartner, fully comprehends the power professional acknowledgment has in steadying a temporizing foot out the door, telling CNBC Make It, âPeople didnât get promoted in 2018. We saw a reluctance from companies to actually significantly promote people. Today, the average employee is at the same level for about four and a half years. Pre-global financial crisis, that was about two and a half years, so the average employee is at the same level roughly 50 percent longer than they were a decade-plus ago. And thatâs a sign that it wasnât a great year for employees.â

President Obamas Task Force on 21st Century Policing
President Obama's Task Force on 21st Century Policing President Obama's Task Force on 21st Century Policing The year 2014 was something of a tumultuous one for police officers in the United States. Several high-profile incidents involving the deaths of unarmed men following police uses of force sparked protests and riots across the country. In response to the increasing sentiment of distrust against law enforcement, President Barack Obama was compelled to convene a Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing President Obama signed an executive order to form the task force on December 18, 2014. The task force was made up of representatives from law enforcement chiefs, police unions, police training officers, community leaders, youth activists, and university professors. The TaskForce's Purpose The task force held seven listening sessions in cities across the United States. During the sessions, they heard from members of the communities to learn how to work towards greater reductions in crime, while at the same time restoring trust in law enforcement. The task force was asked to provide a report within 90 days of forming. The group issued its final report in May of 2015, just two months shy of the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnsons own Presidents Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice. President Obamas task force produced specific action items in 6 topic areas that the group called pillars, as well as two broad recommendations that called for the establishment of a permanent National Crime and Justice Task Force and support for crime prevention programs that incorporate addressing poverty, education and health, and safety issues in communities. Six Pillars for Building Trust in the Community The Presidents task force provided six pillars, not unlike the Johnson Commissions seven objectives. These pillars recommended important changes to how police interact with their communities: First Pillar: Build Trust and LegitimacyThe task force recommended that police officers adopt the guardian concept of policing, in contrast with the idea of the officer as a warrior. They emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in police actions and engaging in activities other than enforcement that can promote a positive image of law enforcement.Second Pillar: Policy and Oversight? The task force suggested that police departments ensure that their policies reflect the values of their communities and that specific policy address issues like the use of force, public demonstrations, and de-escalation. They also recommended peer reviews of critical incidents and external, independent investigators assigned to questionable uses of force and in-custody deaths. Third Pillar: Technology and Social MediaTechnology offers tremendous potential for police departments to better interact with their communities, increase transparency and accountability, and improve safety and security for civilians and officers alike. The task force strongly suggests maximizing the use of technology to improve how police do their jobs on a day-to-day basis.Fourth Pillar: Community Policing and Crime ReductionPolicing a community requires involvement and engagement with the community. The task force recommended that police departments recommit to community-oriented policing strategies to improve community relations and take a more holistic approach to address crime. Fifth Pillar: Training and Education ?The task force encouraged the federal government to foster partnerships with training centers across the country and facilitate more consistent training and standards. They also recommended forming training hubs to encourage innovation, community engagement in training and a national postgraduate institute of policing.Sixth Pillar: Officer Wellness and Safety ?Police work is inherently dangerous and can even be potentially hazardous to officers health. The task force recommended implementing scientifically supported shift lengths and building on research into officer-related deaths and critical injuries. Just as circumstances demanded a change in policing tactics in President Johnsons day, the environment in 2014 required a new way to address how law enforcement approached their communities. In time, through the recommendations of the task force and other law enforcement and community leaders, police may be able to return to their original principles.

Increase Your Billable Hours While You Decrease the Stress
Increase Your Billable Hours While You Decrease the Stress Increase Your Billable Hours While You Decrease the Stress Learning how to manage the expectations of billable hours and the stress they can bring may seem like an insurmountable task. Fortunately, new law office technology and more efficient and comprehensive record-keeping tools can ensure you stay on track and even help you exceed your billable hours requirements. Maximize Billable Hours Expectations Invest in time-tracking technology. Consider how better tools could help increase your efficiency. For example, try using an app, such as iTimeKeep, that enables you to easily and accurately record billable hours on any device you choose, wherever you may be, as well as integrate that information into your firm's billing and time-tracking systems. You can also invest in a legal practice management program that syncs with your calendar and to-do list, automatically recording the time spent on various tasks into your billable hours. Time-tracking software can also produce reports on the time you've spent on each matter so you can double-check your minutes. Promptly record your hours. Record everything - even tasks of short duration. You may not realize how many hours you'll lose if you fail to record minor but billable tasks, such as drafting emails, having a short phone conversation with a client or doing some quick Internet research. All of those small duties you spend a few minutes on each workday can really add up over the course of a year. Manage your email. A simple way to cut down on lost time is to check your email less often. Email is an essential tool for any attorney, of course, and some of the time you spend on email correspondence is billable. However, by taking a more disciplined approach to managing your email â" for example, glancing at it less frequently and scheduling specific time slots to check for incoming messages you can actually save yourself a great deal of time. Also, you may want to turn off the alert that signals the arrival of new messages you don't want a distracting notification popping up on your screen when you're working on a billable task. Another tip: Take your name off unnecessary email lists so you can cut down on messages you receive at your work address. Manage stress outside of work Don't forget to set aside time for yourself, so you can maintain work-life balance. Reserve an hour each day to hit the gym or a few hours every week to have dinner with friends. Also, don't let your vacation days go to waste because you're concerned about falling behind at work. While you need to meet your annual quota of billable hours, it's important to take time off to recharge. Burning out will only increase your stress level and make your goals more difficult to achieve. Meeting billable hours requirements doesn't mean you have to get caught up in a seemingly endless cycle of staying at work late and coming into the office on weekends. Using law office technology to its best advantage, diligently recording all tasks you perform, and managing the time you devote to email during the workday are just three simple but effective ways to increase your billable hours while decreasing your stress.

How to Build the Best Creative Team
How to Build the Best Creative Team How to Build the Best Creative Team Attention employers: Building a great creative team doesn't have to be a challenge. Knowing that the process is part art, part science will keep you on track. I recently spoke at the HOW Design Live Conference about top trends impacting creative teams, including accelerating technological advancements and an increasingly competitive landscape for recruiting and retaining highly skilled employees. (If youâre interested, you can view the slides from my presentation on SlideShare.) A hot topic was how employers can assemble a standout creative team in the face of talent shortages. Hereâs my five-point prescription. 1. The right people In order to build the best creative team, you need the best people (and the right number of them). A few ways to assess if you have the right people is by evaluating technical skills, collaboration abilities, productivity and team size. Skills. With any team, you need to begin with intellectual assets. This is the science part of building a creative team. Your job is to ensure the individuals on your team have the right technical skills and expertise (like software knowledge) as well as a sufficient level of experience. Workplace fit. Can you define what makes a good match for your team and organization? This is the art of building a creative team. After all, there's a job description and there's the right fit. The right fit needs more than the rote skills to execute the tasks associated with the job; the team member must also have the personality, soft skills and work style to fit in with the workplace culture. Team size. Integral to creative team building success is making sure you have the right staffing level. Do you have the flexibility to seamlessly staff up or down during slowdowns and busy seasons? Being able to add key skills as needed to handle elevated work periods keeps teams running smoothly. 2. The right process Having the best creative team means team members are not just passionate and creative, but also productive and efficient. And to be productive and efficient, you need clearly defined expectations. Effective teams have a leader who sets tangible targets, such as deadlines and production schedules, in order to achieve team goals and expectations, with checks and balances along the way. Creative teams can be brilliant, but you can't overlook the need for defined process, direction and focus to keep that brilliance on target. 3. The right leadership (and leadership approach) Without a doubt, your creative team leader must have the technical expertise to communicate with the team, but that's not what will make him or her an effective leader. The best leaders need to identify and communicate a vision and inspire others to create. They must also be humble, approachable and decisive. A strong team leader should know when to be open to the team's thoughts and when to stand firm and make a decision. In general, creative team leaders should focus on: Having open communication between team members and management. While there should be rules of engagement, it should also be understood that there are no dumb questions. Using team-based approaches to solving problems. Don't just tell; ask how others would handle problems or setbacks. Fostering a safe-to-fail and safe-to-risk environment. Creativity can't thrive if risk and failure aren't options. 4. The right environment Creative teams need creative workspaces. Inspiration can be hard to come by when teams are divided, isolated or restricted. Find opportunities in your team's physical environment to inspire creativity. That may mean using a conference room as a collaborative work environment, or structuring desks like a bullpen, with all team members working in open space. The right environment might also mean access to proprietary tools and software, even when team members are away from the office. Flexibility to work from home and access information whenever creativity strikes â" even in the middle of the night â" means your creative team can be effective and productive anytime, anywhere. 5. The right vision It's integral that your creative team understands the bigger purpose of the project, department and company. What's the mission of each? How does each of those individual missions come together to serve one greater goal? For example, if you are building a website, every team member, from the UX designer to the copywriter to the web developer, needs to be unified on mission, goal and purpose, not just for their roles, but for the final deliverable. This is the core of an effective creative team â" understanding not just your individual contributions but how those fit into the greater picture. Getting rich can boil down to 6 wealth factors no matter your age or salary
Getting rich can boil down to 6 'wealth factors' no matter your age or salary Getting rich can boil down to 6 'wealth factors' no matter your age or salary Anyone can become rich if they know the right steps to take. But if you possess a certain set of characteristics, you may be more likely to become wealthy, according to Sarah Stanley Fallaw, director of research for the Affluent Market Institute. She co-authored âThe Next Millionaire Next Door: Enduring Strategies for Building Wealth,â in which she surveyed more than 600 millionaires in America. To identify characteristics most predictive of net worth, Stanley Fallaw conducted two studies that included a group of individuals with a net worth ranging from $100,000 to $1 million and a group of high- and ultra-high-net-worth individuals.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! She found that six behaviors, which she called âwealth factors,â are related to net worth potential, regardless of age or income: Frugality, or a commitment to saving, spending less, and sticking to a budget Confidence in financial management, investing, and household leadership Responsibility, which involves accepting your role in financial outcomes and believing that luck plays little role Planning, or setting goals for your financial future Focus on seeing tasks through to their completion without being distracted Social indifference, or not succumbing to social pressure to buy the latest thing Frugality came up several times during Stanley Fallawâs research - many of the millionaires she interviewed stressed the freedom that comes with spending below their means. Being frugal was one of three key ways they achieved financial independence.âSpending above your means, spending instead of saving for retirement, spending in anticipation of becoming wealthy makes you a slave to the paycheck, even with a stellar level of income,â she wrote. To properly build wealth, experts recommend saving 20% of your income and living off the remaining 80%.Having confidence, another key characteristic, will help you be frugal. In a Gen Y Planning blog post, financial planner Sophia Bera wrote, âIt takes confidence to live within your means.âIt also takes confidence to invest properly - instead of making investing decisions with your emotions, you should leave your investments alone and focus on a long-term investment plan, certified financial planner Shelly-Ann Eweka previously wrot e for Business Insider. But you canât invest - or manage your own money - without accepting responsibility for the outcomes.Like Stanley Fallaw, Chris Hogan, author of âEveryday Millionaires: How Ordinary People Built Extraordinary Wealth - and How You Can Too,â also found that many millionaires take on personal responsibility- and most also happen to be self-made, meaning they didnât acquire their wealth through luck.â[Millionaires] donât count on anyone else to make them rich, and they donât blame anyone else if they fall short,â Hogan wrote. âThey focus on things they can control and align their daily habits to the goals theyâve set for themselves.âHe also found that theyâre goal-oriented and hard workers, which enable them to plan financially and focus on seeing those plans through. Ninety-two percent of the millionaires he surveyed develop a long-term plan for their money, and 97% almost always achieve the goals they set for themselves. These behaviors make it easy for them to be socially indifferent. She co-authored âThe Next Millionaire Next Door: Enduring Strategies for Building Wealth,â in which she surveyed more than 600 millionaires in America. To identify characteristics most predictive of net worth, Stanley Fallaw conducted two studies that included a group of individuals with a net worth ranging from $100,000 to $1 million and a group of high- and ultra-high-net-worth individuals. They resist the lifestyle creep, the tendency to spend more whenever one earns more. 3 ways to handle employees who constantly have an excuse
3 ways to handle employees who constantly have an excuse 3 ways to handle employees who constantly have an excuse Being around employees who always make excuses can be tough, whether youâre a coworker or the boss. Hereâs how to handle those who act like this on a regular basis. If youâre a manager, think about if you want them aroundAnne Loehr, who describes herself as a âgenerational guru, author transformational leader,â writes on her website about managing employees who make excuses. The information she provides is based on a book she co-wrote named Managing the Unmanageable: How to Motivate Even the Most Unruly Employee. She writes about an âunmanageable employee,â or âUE,â dubbed âThe Excuse-Maker.âHer first tip is to âcommit or quit.ââThe first choice a manager faces, with any UE, is the choice of whether to try to retain the UE or not. This is a matter that requires careful thinking. After all, youâre weighing the costs and benefits of taking on a major challenge (UE salvage) against the costs and benefits of starting from scratch by finding and hiring a new employee. This decision is a significant one, because UE salvage, if you decide to attempt it, requires that you make a firm and serious commitment to your unmanageable employeeâs future. Why commit to someone you might not even like? Hereâs why.âDonât sweep things under the rugThis might backfire on you.Paul Petrone, editor of LinkedIn Learning, writes about a course on the site called âCoaching Employees Through Difficult Situations,â taught by Elizabeth McLeod. She is the vice president of client engagement at McLeod More, Inc.Petrone outlines her four-step approach - the second step, he mentions, is to âacknowledge the pattern of misses.ââLetâs say the excuse is not particularly legitimate and theyâve made similar mistakes several times. Now is the time to bring that series of misses to the employeeâs attention,â Petrone writes. âFor example, if the person has missed deadlines repeatedly, call that out â" as opposed to focusing on this monthâs ex cuse.âBe precise about what you wantTom Ceconi, co-founder of HR360, writes on the websiteâs video blog about how managers can work with employees who always make excuses, and explains how important it is to be precise about work expectations.âMake sure to give clear direction. If your employee often says he couldnât get the project done because the assignment wasnât clear, you may be dealing with someone who - at least for the moment - needs more detailed directives than your other team members,â he writes. âItâs also possible that your directions were, in fact, unclear. Break down long assignments into smaller tasks, and review them carefully with the employee, giving pointers on the most efficient approach.â

Interview Questions You Should Never Answer
Interview Questions You Should Never Answer Interview Questions You Should Never Answer Know your rights so youâre never caught off-guard during a job interview. There are certain questions that are off-limits during an interview. However, itâs not uncommon for an inexperienced interviewer to sneak in a question or two that are considered inappropriate or in some cases, against the law. As a job seeker, itâs important to not only prepare for the questions recruiters should ask you, but to also be ready to dodge questions that do not warrant an answer and avoid interview keywords that could hurt your chances of getting hired. How old are you?You donât have to answer any questions about your age other than stating that youâre over the age of 18. You are also not required to submit a photo ID (which has your date of birth on it) during the interview process. If asked, you can simply tell the interviewer that youâre concerned about identity theft and would prefer not to hand it over until itâs determined whether youâll be joining their team. Be conscious of ho w you answer the question âAre you at least 18 years of age?â If you make a joke about your age, you are drawing negative attention to it.Whatâs your nationality? You do not need to answer any questions about your nationality, citizenship status, or how long youâve lived in the United States. If an interviewer starts in with this line of questioning, simply explain that youâre legally able to work in the United States. If some of your education or previous experience took place overseas, you have the option to state that youâre legally able to work in the U.S. on your resume. Are you married? Do you have any children? While interviewers can ask you whether youâve used another name professionally or during your education, they canât ask about your marital status, children, or if you plan to have a family in the future. Often the interviewer is innocently trying to break the ice by asking about your family. In these situations, redirect the question back to the interviewe r. For instance, if they ask about your marital status you can reply by saying, âIt sounds like family is important to you. Are you married?â This way, youâve kept up the friendly banter without disclosing any information about your personal life.Do you have any spiritual beliefs?Questions about your religious beliefs are off-limits during an interview, including your religious affiliations and what religious holidays your observe. If an interviewer brings up this topic, try to figure out what theyâre concerned with and then address those concerns. Perhaps theyâre worried you wonât be able to work certain days of the week or certain times of day that are required for the role. How long would your commute be to this office? The interviewer shouldnât ask you how far away you live from the office; however, he is allowed to find out if youâre able to start work at a certain hour or relocate for the position. If youâre targeting positions that require relocation, donât be afraid to state in your professional summary on your resume and online profiles that youâre willing and able to relocate immediately. If you have family in the area or youâve lived there in the past, thereâs nothing wrong with stating that you have an established, local support system. This demonstrates that youâre not a costly flight risk, should they hire you.The next time an interviewer touches on one of these topics, try to find out what she is actually concerned about and steer the conversation to address those particular concerns. Keep the conversation light and friendly â" you donât need to come off as angry or defensive. Remember, often the interviewer is unaware of the federal laws and is simply being friendly.

How to Lead a Team
How to Lead a Team How to Lead a Team Leaders are hard to find- at any level of your organization. Leaders exhibit a unique blend of charisma, vision and character traits that attract people to follow them. They exhibit the other nine characteristics around which this article series was developed as well. But, mostly, as they exhibit these leadership traits and characteristics, they become the person that other people want to follow- even choose to follow given the opportunity. Respected leaders know that they cant just walk into a room and say, Hey Im the leader. Follow me. If youre the boss, you can get away with this attitude to a certain degree, but the followers you attract will be compulsory and not following you by their own choice. They will heed your advice and obey your commands, but it is involuntary followership based on your organizational hierarchy to a large degree. Leaders understand that to actually lead most effectively and successfully, they need to attract people who want to follow them. How Leaders Attract Followers Leaders recognize their need to attract followers. Followership is key to understanding leadership. To follow, people must feel confident in the direction in which the leader is headed. To have this level of confidence, the leader must have clearly communicated the overall direction, the key outcomes desired, and the principal strategies agreed upon to reach the outcomes. Then, employees are enabled and empowered to do their part in accomplishing the stated objectives. They have the framework that they need to guide their own actions. And, empowered employees do want to guide their own actions. You will fail as a leader to your best employees if you ever forget this fact. One of the key factors in whether an employee stays with their current employer is that the employee has confidence and trust that the leaders know what they are doing. This confidence gives employees the control they need for their livelihood and supporting their family. Further, leaders people follow are accountable and trustworthy. If progress towards accomplishing the goals ceases, the leader takes responsibility to analyze the problem- they dont search for people to blame. Consequently, people can have confidence that their leader wonât punish them for their efforts if they take reasonable and responsible risks that are well thought out and well-founded. They are accountable and responsible to deserve their leaders confidence and trust. Followers Expect Leaders to Recognize and Reward Them for Their Success Followers need to believe that, at the end of the journey, their leader will recognize and reward them for their contribution. The leader must help followers answer the question, âWhatâs in it for me? Successful leaders are honest about the potential risks inherent in the chosen path as well as the potential rewards. They communicate, not just the overall direction, but any information their followers need to successfully and skillfully carry out their responsibilities. They recognize that for their followers to perform most effectively they need to understand the big picture. They also know that their job is to remove barriers that may have a negative impact on the employees success- not to micromanage how the employees accomplish their work. They need to know why the organization is pursuing the current strategies. They need their leader for guidance and to help remove any barriers they may experience along the way. Mostly, they need the assurance that their leader has confidence in their ability to perform and produce the desired outcomes. If any of these factors are missing, leaders will have a tough time attracting followers. At the end of the day, it is the entwining of the relationship of the leader with the followers that makes their organization or portion of the organization succeed. When the Leader Is Also the Boss Occasionally, the leader is the person who is in charge, the founder of the business, the CEO, the president or department head. Leadership qualities combined with positional power magnify the ability of an individual to attract and retain the all-important followers. In fact, business owners can count on a certain amount of respect and followership based on their ownership and title. Longevity, too, plays a role in attracting and retaining followers. People who have followed the leader for ten years are likely to continue to follow unless they lose trust in the leaderâs direction. But, never forget, no matter what your position is in the organization, even if your current job is a valued contributor, you can become a leader that other employees want to follow. In fact, in organizations, one of the reasons employees are promoted to positions such as team leader, supervisor, or department manager, is that they have demonstrated over time that people will follow them.
