Professional Resume Writers and Their Magic Wands
Professional Resume Writers and Their Magic Wands Professional Resume Writers and Their Magic Wands Today Im working on a fantastic project. My client has a diverse and interesting background and is making a career change. His experiences are perfect for what he wants to do next, but presenting them well means carefully sifting through them and selecting the things that are most helpful while minimizing the stuff that might distract recruiters.I love doing this and Im good at it. I instinctively know what to include and what to leave out and how to lay it all out on the page. If you have relevant experience, no matter how long ago, or how unusual it is, I can help you show your worth. But sometimes Im approached by people I cant help. People who simply dont have the experience required but who think I have a magic wand. Todays was an IT professional who wanted to go into web konzept. The only problem is that he hadnt done any web design I dont mean he hadnt done any professionally. I mean he hadnt done any. No volunteer work, no college studies, no unpaid work for friends and family. NothingI know I could do a great job, he told me. I just need someone to give me a chance and I can learn on the job. Thats where a good resume comes in.Um no. Actually it isnt. There is nothing I can do on a resume that can make up for the fact that you havent put in the time. If you have unpaid experience, I can make it look paid. If youve freelanced while working full-time jobs, I can bring that freelancing to the forefront. if you started out in design and then moved away from it, I have tricks to bring that design experience back into focus for employers. If youve taken college classes, I can write about your college design projects. But if youre just hoping to persuade employers to hire you with no experience and then teach you the job, youre hoping for a miracle and miracles I dont do.Photo by DoubleM2
Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans
Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans Realizing there was a need for veterans to find a way to use the skills they acquired during their military service and for employers to recruit highly skilled job candidates, in August 2018, Google announced a new addition to its Grow With Google initiative- Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans. This resource lets service members who are returning to the civilian workforce locate post-military jobs that match the roles they performed in the armed forces. A related service helps veterans who are starting their own businesses let customers know these entities are owned or led by veterans. Each year, approximately 200,000 service members leave the military and over the last five years, just under one million have returned to civilian life (Veteran Impact in the Workforce. Syracuse University Institute for Veterans and Military Families). One of the most significant problems transitioning veterans face involves entering or re-entering the civilian workforce. Close to half (45 percent) want to remain in careers related to their military jobs, but they struggle to find a way to fully utilize their skills. Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans helps facilitate this process. What Is Grow With Google? The tech giant launched Grow With Google in 2017 to provide free training, events, and tools to help individuals, including veterans and their spouses, acquire skills needed to succeed in school, the workplace, or their own businesses. It gives people who are not directly affiliated with Google the ability to utilize the companyâs tools and training to expand their skill sets and, subsequently, their employability or success as entrepreneurs. One can get a professional certification in IT support or learn how to utilize Googleâs tools through self-paced video lessons. Another extremely useful component of Grow With Google is a job search tool that gathers employment opportunities from around the web. Users can access it directly from the search engineâs homepage by entering keywords, for example, ânursing jobs near me, into the Google search bar. WIth Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans, former service people can further customize their search in order to find jobs that match their military roles. How to Use Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans To access Grow With Google Job Search for Veterans, go to the Google homepage and enter âjobs for veterans in the search box. You will then be asked to enter your MOS code. This is your Military Occupational Specialty- the job you held while in the armed forces. Depending on the branch of the military in which you served, this will be your MOS which is used by the Army and Marine Corps, AFSC (Air Force Specialty Code), or NEC (Navy Enlisted Classification). Your results will include relevant civilian jobs that correspond to the skills you used in your military role. Google Also Helps Vets Who Are Business Owners Google also recognizes the fact that some veterans opt to start their own businesses instead of looking for employment. The company introduced a way to promote vet-owned or led companies. Using Google My Business to create a free profile, those companies can self-identify so customers can easily find them. More Ways Google Helps Veterans Access Job Opportunities Companies that use Googles Cloud Talent Solution can provide job listings on their career sites that take veterans military skills into account. Service members who are looking for work can use their MOS, AFSC, or NEC to search for jobs on many employers websites or several job boards. Here are some of the sites that let you match your military skills with civilian job opportunities: Career Builder: Use Career Builder, a job board, to search for openings in a variety of fields. Type your MOS or relevant code into the search box.Getting Hired: This site specializes in matching disabled job seekers and veterans with employment.FedEx for Veterans: The package delivery company has a job search tool dedicated specifically to veterans. Enter your MOS or other occupational specialty code to see if it is hiring people with your skills.Encompass Health: Encompass Health provides inpatient rehabilitation, home healthcare, and hospice services. The company actively recruits veterans by allowing them to search by military occupational codes. Siemens: This German-based multi-national conglomerate hires in the career fields of engineering, manufacturing, operations, information technology, and sales and marketing. Enter your MOS or related code into the search box. If theres a matching job, it will show up in your results.

Over 60% of workers have thought about quitting their jobs because of this reason
Over 60% of workers have thought about quitting their jobs because of this reason Over 60% of workers have thought about quitting their jobs because of this reason I donât know that itâs actually possible to achieve enduring job satisfaction. Career malaise is easier to identify in the corporate world, but it permeates all industries, it just takes different forms. Paper pushers slump in their cubicles and start a stamp collection, while rock stars develop a coke habit and put out albums like Bridges to Babylon; both examples evidence a lack of drive and starvation for appreciation. There are also circumstantial factors donating to frequent reporting on job satisfaction. For one thing, the herd now entering their early thirties grew up in a time wherein college degrees were pitched as golden tickets. Get a degree in anything as soon as possible has finally reached its dead end. The other, less charitable factor, is the one about my generation-workforce millennials being the most voracious for approval. Iâll grant that anecdotal evidence makes this a uniquely difficult charge to fight, but not without insisting that the root isnât neces sarily narcissism and self-absorption. I donât think itâs a crime to welcome professional self-evaluations, many of which can only be properly addressed by requesting feedback from employers. Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The key questionsIn a new CNBC/SurveyMonkey Workplace Happiness Survey, a third of the 8,000 American working adults queried said that they considered quitting their job in the last three months. Sixty-seven percent of this demographic reported ruminating over this resolve because they feel undervalued. To be clear, a quarter meant this in terms of salary, while the remaining meant they would like more verbal demonstrations of appreciation for the work they do from their colleagues.Ninety percent of workers that havenât given resignation a serious thought still lamented this lack of recognition; this was a recurring theme in the new report. Wor kers that have considered quitting and those that havenât (yet) still agreed on the key issues troubling their place of employment- a lack of mentorship availability, the perceived refusal to instruct staff on how to operate and or combat automation on behalf of their employers, and a frustrating hesitance evidenced by their bosses to validate their efforts. . Validation doesnât only have to be communicated via a moist, hand on the shoulder âAtta boy!â sentiments, in fact, most find these affirmations to be condescending. Workers like to be alerted to their value in the form of increased opportunities within their firms, the younger the employee the fiercer the appetite. One in four respondents that belong to the Gen Z and millennial generation (age 18â"24) feel that opportunities to advance are the most important precursor to the longevity of their tenure at a given company. Some autonomy must be allowed in the crawl space between positions, as salary isnât a strong enough incentive on its own to motivate workers to rise to the challenge. Telling employees precisely how and exactly how long it should take them to complete a task is to ignore the grit and grain of the bottom of the professional food chain-productivity will suffer and company morale will suffer. Seventy-one percent of workers that have considered quitting in the last months occasioned doing so by reason of lack of self-government within their position.Roughly 3.5 million U.S workers quit their jobs every month; the unemployment rate being what it is, means the well of passionate competent workers of which to replace these with dries more and more every year.Brian Kropp, who is the vice president at research firm Gartner, fully comprehends the power professional acknowledgment has in steadying a temporizing foot out the door, telling CNBC Make It, âPeople didnât get promoted in 2018. We saw a reluctance from companies to actually significantly promote people. Today, the average employee is at the same level for about four and a half years. Pre-global financial crisis, that was about two and a half years, so the average employee is at the same level roughly 50 percent longer than they were a decade-plus ago. And thatâs a sign that it wasnât a great year for employees.â

President Obamas Task Force on 21st Century Policing
President Obama's Task Force on 21st Century Policing President Obama's Task Force on 21st Century Policing The year 2014 was something of a tumultuous one for police officers in the United States. Several high-profile incidents involving the deaths of unarmed men following police uses of force sparked protests and riots across the country. In response to the increasing sentiment of distrust against law enforcement, President Barack Obama was compelled to convene a Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing President Obama signed an executive order to form the task force on December 18, 2014. The task force was made up of representatives from law enforcement chiefs, police unions, police training officers, community leaders, youth activists, and university professors. The TaskForce's Purpose The task force held seven listening sessions in cities across the United States. During the sessions, they heard from members of the communities to learn how to work towards greater reductions in crime, while at the same time restoring trust in law enforcement. The task force was asked to provide a report within 90 days of forming. The group issued its final report in May of 2015, just two months shy of the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnsons own Presidents Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice. President Obamas task force produced specific action items in 6 topic areas that the group called pillars, as well as two broad recommendations that called for the establishment of a permanent National Crime and Justice Task Force and support for crime prevention programs that incorporate addressing poverty, education and health, and safety issues in communities. Six Pillars for Building Trust in the Community The Presidents task force provided six pillars, not unlike the Johnson Commissions seven objectives. These pillars recommended important changes to how police interact with their communities: First Pillar: Build Trust and LegitimacyThe task force recommended that police officers adopt the guardian concept of policing, in contrast with the idea of the officer as a warrior. They emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in police actions and engaging in activities other than enforcement that can promote a positive image of law enforcement.Second Pillar: Policy and Oversight? The task force suggested that police departments ensure that their policies reflect the values of their communities and that specific policy address issues like the use of force, public demonstrations, and de-escalation. They also recommended peer reviews of critical incidents and external, independent investigators assigned to questionable uses of force and in-custody deaths. Third Pillar: Technology and Social MediaTechnology offers tremendous potential for police departments to better interact with their communities, increase transparency and accountability, and improve safety and security for civilians and officers alike. The task force strongly suggests maximizing the use of technology to improve how police do their jobs on a day-to-day basis.Fourth Pillar: Community Policing and Crime ReductionPolicing a community requires involvement and engagement with the community. The task force recommended that police departments recommit to community-oriented policing strategies to improve community relations and take a more holistic approach to address crime. Fifth Pillar: Training and Education ?The task force encouraged the federal government to foster partnerships with training centers across the country and facilitate more consistent training and standards. They also recommended forming training hubs to encourage innovation, community engagement in training and a national postgraduate institute of policing.Sixth Pillar: Officer Wellness and Safety ?Police work is inherently dangerous and can even be potentially hazardous to officers health. The task force recommended implementing scientifically supported shift lengths and building on research into officer-related deaths and critical injuries. Just as circumstances demanded a change in policing tactics in President Johnsons day, the environment in 2014 required a new way to address how law enforcement approached their communities. In time, through the recommendations of the task force and other law enforcement and community leaders, police may be able to return to their original principles.

Increase Your Billable Hours While You Decrease the Stress
Increase Your Billable Hours While You Decrease the Stress Increase Your Billable Hours While You Decrease the Stress Learning how to manage the expectations of billable hours and the stress they can bring may seem like an insurmountable task. Fortunately, new law office technology and more efficient and comprehensive record-keeping tools can ensure you stay on track and even help you exceed your billable hours requirements. Maximize Billable Hours Expectations Invest in time-tracking technology. Consider how better tools could help increase your efficiency. For example, try using an app, such as iTimeKeep, that enables you to easily and accurately record billable hours on any device you choose, wherever you may be, as well as integrate that information into your firm's billing and time-tracking systems. You can also invest in a legal practice management program that syncs with your calendar and to-do list, automatically recording the time spent on various tasks into your billable hours. Time-tracking software can also produce reports on the time you've spent on each matter so you can double-check your minutes. Promptly record your hours. Record everything - even tasks of short duration. You may not realize how many hours you'll lose if you fail to record minor but billable tasks, such as drafting emails, having a short phone conversation with a client or doing some quick Internet research. All of those small duties you spend a few minutes on each workday can really add up over the course of a year. Manage your email. A simple way to cut down on lost time is to check your email less often. Email is an essential tool for any attorney, of course, and some of the time you spend on email correspondence is billable. However, by taking a more disciplined approach to managing your email â" for example, glancing at it less frequently and scheduling specific time slots to check for incoming messages you can actually save yourself a great deal of time. Also, you may want to turn off the alert that signals the arrival of new messages you don't want a distracting notification popping up on your screen when you're working on a billable task. Another tip: Take your name off unnecessary email lists so you can cut down on messages you receive at your work address. Manage stress outside of work Don't forget to set aside time for yourself, so you can maintain work-life balance. Reserve an hour each day to hit the gym or a few hours every week to have dinner with friends. Also, don't let your vacation days go to waste because you're concerned about falling behind at work. While you need to meet your annual quota of billable hours, it's important to take time off to recharge. Burning out will only increase your stress level and make your goals more difficult to achieve. Meeting billable hours requirements doesn't mean you have to get caught up in a seemingly endless cycle of staying at work late and coming into the office on weekends. Using law office technology to its best advantage, diligently recording all tasks you perform, and managing the time you devote to email during the workday are just three simple but effective ways to increase your billable hours while decreasing your stress.

How to Build the Best Creative Team
How to Build the Best Creative Team How to Build the Best Creative Team Attention employers: Building a great creative team doesn't have to be a challenge. Knowing that the process is part art, part science will keep you on track. I recently spoke at the HOW Design Live Conference about top trends impacting creative teams, including accelerating technological advancements and an increasingly competitive landscape for recruiting and retaining highly skilled employees. (If youâre interested, you can view the slides from my presentation on SlideShare.) A hot topic was how employers can assemble a standout creative team in the face of talent shortages. Hereâs my five-point prescription. 1. The right people In order to build the best creative team, you need the best people (and the right number of them). A few ways to assess if you have the right people is by evaluating technical skills, collaboration abilities, productivity and team size. Skills. With any team, you need to begin with intellectual assets. This is the science part of building a creative team. Your job is to ensure the individuals on your team have the right technical skills and expertise (like software knowledge) as well as a sufficient level of experience. Workplace fit. Can you define what makes a good match for your team and organization? This is the art of building a creative team. After all, there's a job description and there's the right fit. The right fit needs more than the rote skills to execute the tasks associated with the job; the team member must also have the personality, soft skills and work style to fit in with the workplace culture. Team size. Integral to creative team building success is making sure you have the right staffing level. Do you have the flexibility to seamlessly staff up or down during slowdowns and busy seasons? Being able to add key skills as needed to handle elevated work periods keeps teams running smoothly. 2. The right process Having the best creative team means team members are not just passionate and creative, but also productive and efficient. And to be productive and efficient, you need clearly defined expectations. Effective teams have a leader who sets tangible targets, such as deadlines and production schedules, in order to achieve team goals and expectations, with checks and balances along the way. Creative teams can be brilliant, but you can't overlook the need for defined process, direction and focus to keep that brilliance on target. 3. The right leadership (and leadership approach) Without a doubt, your creative team leader must have the technical expertise to communicate with the team, but that's not what will make him or her an effective leader. The best leaders need to identify and communicate a vision and inspire others to create. They must also be humble, approachable and decisive. A strong team leader should know when to be open to the team's thoughts and when to stand firm and make a decision. In general, creative team leaders should focus on: Having open communication between team members and management. While there should be rules of engagement, it should also be understood that there are no dumb questions. Using team-based approaches to solving problems. Don't just tell; ask how others would handle problems or setbacks. Fostering a safe-to-fail and safe-to-risk environment. Creativity can't thrive if risk and failure aren't options. 4. The right environment Creative teams need creative workspaces. Inspiration can be hard to come by when teams are divided, isolated or restricted. Find opportunities in your team's physical environment to inspire creativity. That may mean using a conference room as a collaborative work environment, or structuring desks like a bullpen, with all team members working in open space. The right environment might also mean access to proprietary tools and software, even when team members are away from the office. Flexibility to work from home and access information whenever creativity strikes â" even in the middle of the night â" means your creative team can be effective and productive anytime, anywhere. 5. The right vision It's integral that your creative team understands the bigger purpose of the project, department and company. What's the mission of each? How does each of those individual missions come together to serve one greater goal? For example, if you are building a website, every team member, from the UX designer to the copywriter to the web developer, needs to be unified on mission, goal and purpose, not just for their roles, but for the final deliverable. This is the core of an effective creative team â" understanding not just your individual contributions but how those fit into the greater picture. She writes about an âunmanageable employee,â or âUE,â dubbed âThe Excuse-Maker.âHer first tip is to âcommit or quit.ââThe first choice a manager faces, with any UE, is the choice of whether to try to retain the UE or not. This is a matter that requires careful thinking. After all, youâre weighing the costs and benefits of taking on a major challenge (UE salvage) against the costs and benefits of starting from scratch by finding and hiring a new employee. She is the vice president of client engagement at McLeod More, Inc.Petrone outlines her four-step approach - the second step, he mentions, is to âacknowledge the pattern of misses.ââLetâs say the excuse is not particularly legitimate and theyâve made similar mistakes several times. Now is the time to bring that series of misses to the employeeâs attention,â Petrone writes. âFor example, if the person has missed deadlines repeatedly, call that out â" as opposed to focusing on this monthâs ex cuse.âBe precise about what you wantTom Ceconi, co-founder of HR360, writes on the websiteâs video blog about how managers can work with employees who always make excuses, and explains how important it is to be precise about work expectations.âMake sure to give clear direction. If your employee often says he couldnât get the project done because the assignment wasnât clear, you may be dealing with someone who - at least for the moment - needs more detailed directives than your other team members,â he writes. âItâs also possible that your directions were, in fact, unclear. Break down long assignments into smaller tasks, and review them carefully with the employee, giving pointers on the most efficient approach.â

Interview Questions You Should Never Answer
Interview Questions You Should Never Answer Interview Questions You Should Never Answer Know your rights so youâre never caught off-guard during a job interview. There are certain questions that are off-limits during an interview. However, itâs not uncommon for an inexperienced interviewer to sneak in a question or two that are considered inappropriate or in some cases, against the law. As a job seeker, itâs important to not only prepare for the questions recruiters should ask you, but to also be ready to dodge questions that do not warrant an answer and avoid interview keywords that could hurt your chances of getting hired. How old are you?You donât have to answer any questions about your age other than stating that youâre over the age of 18. You are also not required to submit a photo ID (which has your date of birth on it) during the interview process. If asked, you can simply tell the interviewer that youâre concerned about identity theft and would prefer not to hand it over until itâs determined whether youâll be joining their team. Be conscious of ho w you answer the question âAre you at least 18 years of age?â If you make a joke about your age, you are drawing negative attention to it.Whatâs your nationality? You do not need to answer any questions about your nationality, citizenship status, or how long youâve lived in the United States. If an interviewer starts in with this line of questioning, simply explain that youâre legally able to work in the United States. If some of your education or previous experience took place overseas, you have the option to state that youâre legally able to work in the U.S. on your resume. Are you married? Do you have any children? While interviewers can ask you whether youâve used another name professionally or during your education, they canât ask about your marital status, children, or if you plan to have a family in the future. Often the interviewer is innocently trying to break the ice by asking about your family. In these situations, redirect the question back to the interviewe r. For instance, if they ask about your marital status you can reply by saying, âIt sounds like family is important to you. Are you married?â This way, youâve kept up the friendly banter without disclosing any information about your personal life.Do you have any spiritual beliefs?Questions about your religious beliefs are off-limits during an interview, including your religious affiliations and what religious holidays your observe. If an interviewer brings up this topic, try to figure out what theyâre concerned with and then address those concerns. Perhaps theyâre worried you wonât be able to work certain days of the week or certain times of day that are required for the role. How long would your commute be to this office? The interviewer shouldnât ask you how far away you live from the office; however, he is allowed to find out if youâre able to start work at a certain hour or relocate for the position. If youâre targeting positions that require relocation, donât be afraid to state in your professional summary on your resume and online profiles that youâre willing and able to relocate immediately. If you have family in the area or youâve lived there in the past, thereâs nothing wrong with stating that you have an established, local support system. This demonstrates that youâre not a costly flight risk, should they hire you.The next time an interviewer touches on one of these topics, try to find out what she is actually concerned about and steer the conversation to address those particular concerns. Keep the conversation light and friendly â" you donât need to come off as angry or defensive. Remember, often the interviewer is unaware of the federal laws and is simply being friendly.

How to Lead a Team
How to Lead a Team How to Lead a Team Leaders are hard to find- at any level of your organization. Leaders exhibit a unique blend of charisma, vision and character traits that attract people to follow them. They exhibit the other nine characteristics around which this article series was developed as well. But, mostly, as they exhibit these leadership traits and characteristics, they become the person that other people want to follow- even choose to follow given the opportunity. Respected leaders know that they cant just walk into a room and say, Hey Im the leader. Follow me. If youre the boss, you can get away with this attitude to a certain degree, but the followers you attract will be compulsory and not following you by their own choice. They will heed your advice and obey your commands, but it is involuntary followership based on your organizational hierarchy to a large degree. Leaders understand that to actually lead most effectively and successfully, they need to attract people who want to follow them. How Leaders Attract Followers Leaders recognize their need to attract followers. Followership is key to understanding leadership. To follow, people must feel confident in the direction in which the leader is headed. To have this level of confidence, the leader must have clearly communicated the overall direction, the key outcomes desired, and the principal strategies agreed upon to reach the outcomes. Then, employees are enabled and empowered to do their part in accomplishing the stated objectives. They have the framework that they need to guide their own actions. And, empowered employees do want to guide their own actions. You will fail as a leader to your best employees if you ever forget this fact. One of the key factors in whether an employee stays with their current employer is that the employee has confidence and trust that the leaders know what they are doing. This confidence gives employees the control they need for their livelihood and supporting their family. Further, leaders people follow are accountable and trustworthy. If progress towards accomplishing the goals ceases, the leader takes responsibility to analyze the problem- they dont search for people to blame. Consequently, people can have confidence that their leader wonât punish them for their efforts if they take reasonable and responsible risks that are well thought out and well-founded. They are accountable and responsible to deserve their leaders confidence and trust. Followers Expect Leaders to Recognize and Reward Them for Their Success Followers need to believe that, at the end of the journey, their leader will recognize and reward them for their contribution. The leader must help followers answer the question, âWhatâs in it for me? Successful leaders are honest about the potential risks inherent in the chosen path as well as the potential rewards. They communicate, not just the overall direction, but any information their followers need to successfully and skillfully carry out their responsibilities. They recognize that for their followers to perform most effectively they need to understand the big picture. They also know that their job is to remove barriers that may have a negative impact on the employees success- not to micromanage how the employees accomplish their work. They need to know why the organization is pursuing the current strategies. They need their leader for guidance and to help remove any barriers they may experience along the way. Mostly, they need the assurance that their leader has confidence in their ability to perform and produce the desired outcomes. If any of these factors are missing, leaders will have a tough time attracting followers. At the end of the day, it is the entwining of the relationship of the leader with the followers that makes their organization or portion of the organization succeed. When the Leader Is Also the Boss Occasionally, the leader is the person who is in charge, the founder of the business, the CEO, the president or department head. Leadership qualities combined with positional power magnify the ability of an individual to attract and retain the all-important followers. In fact, business owners can count on a certain amount of respect and followership based on their ownership and title. Longevity, too, plays a role in attracting and retaining followers. People who have followed the leader for ten years are likely to continue to follow unless they lose trust in the leaderâs direction. But, never forget, no matter what your position is in the organization, even if your current job is a valued contributor, you can become a leader that other employees want to follow. In fact, in organizations, one of the reasons employees are promoted to positions such as team leader, supervisor, or department manager, is that they have demonstrated over time that people will follow them.
